Winfield Ira Flanigan - Log of Pacific Cruise on U.S.S. Connecticut - Great White Fleet 1908
2003Booklet relating to the service of Electrician Third Class Winfield Ira Flanagan of the United States Navy on board U.S.S. Connecticut, the flagship of the American Great White Fleet in 1908-1909.
It is a spiral bound booklet with covers of clear plastic over card front and back. The front cover has a photograph of the U.S.S. Connecticut High Speed trial, 1906, off the coast of Penboscot Bay, Maine, and a scan of the cover of W.I. Flanigan's 'Log of Pacific Cruise' July 1908-1909. Both images are bordered in red-brown.
There are 6 introductory pages labelled i-vi, followed by 37 numbered pages with text, photographs and illustrations from the log - a diary describing significant events. It includes photos of the places the fleet visited, some on board the ship and others of souvenirs he sent back to family members or brought home with him.
Some of the images were produced from glass negatives by Winfield while others were obtained from the U.S. Naval Historical Center and other research institutions to help illustrate the text.
According to Ancestry records, Winfield Ira Flanigan was born in Defiance, Iowa, Shelby County on 3 June 1882. to Emily Frances Parry, age 25, and Marcellus “Tim” Flanigan, age 31. He had 5 sisters and grew up with a difficult father. He left home, joined the Navy and sailed with the Great White Fleet around the world 1907-09. He married Elnora “Nora” Failing on 15 February 1913 in Canajoharie, New York, USA. They had four children during their marriage. He died on 19 July 1938 in Canajoharie, New York, USA, at the age of 56, and was buried there.
This booklet was collated by Winfield's daughter, Jean Emily Wetherbee (nee Flanigan) and Stephanie Flanigan Woods. It includes three pages relating to the visit of the fleet to Albany from September 11-19 1908.
