TAMBOUR, FLOUNCE

Overview

A delicate lacey flounce, cotton tamboured floral design on silk net made in England late 19th century.

Flounces, deep ruffles or gathered trimmings, were particularly fashionable in women's clothing during the 1850s, especially on skirts and sleeves. This decade saw a surge in the popularity of voluminous skirts supported by crinolines and adorned with multiple layers of flounces. They also appeared on sleeves and continued to be a feature into the later Victorian era.
