Bronze plaque depicting WWI aerial dogfight
1919Circular bronze plaque etched or engraved with images of WWI planes engaged in a dogfight.
The British plane is at the centre of the plaque, surrounded by German planes.
One of the German planes has been hit and is going down in flames. Three others are still engaged in the aerial battle with the allied plane.
The background is very detailed with clouds which shimmer in the light as the piece is moved.
The plaque is attached to a wooden backing which has a metal loop on the reverse for hanging.
It is one of a pair by the same artist, with the other showing a battle scene with an allied tank being bombed from the air by a German squadron.
The artwork depicts an aerial battle or dogfight between the British Royal Flying Corps (or Royal Air Force depending on the date) and the German Air Force. The Brits are holding their own in this particular battle, so it is likely the artist came from the United Kingdom or one of her allies.
