War Savings Campaign advertisement - 'Patriotic Pounds'
c. 1940Cutting from a newspaper or magazine relating to the War Savings Campaign in Britain during WWII. It is in grayscale with a cream background and is surrounded by a border which looks like rope or chain.
It features an illustration of the Pound symbol waving a British flag.
The National War Savings Committee was established during the Great War. It covered England and Wales, with separate organisations set up for Scotland and Ireland. It encouraged organisation of local voluntary savings associations, and introduced war savings deposits, later known as war savings certificates, which were sold through the Post Office and Trustee Savings Banks.
While various schemes were set up to be responsible for funding the production of ships (Warship Week), weapons (Salute the Soldier Week) and aircraft (Wings for victory Week), it also played a critical role in inspiring patriotism and boosting the morale of the British public during a time of crisis.
