LACE, MACHINE, NECKLACE

2010
Overview

This contemporary red lace necklace, an original design, was made by hand free- machine embroidery by the donor, Anne Illman, in Perth, Western Australia.
Beautifully designed and stitched, it illustrates a variety of patterns using straight stitching. Some of these emulate hand needlelace, others bobbin lace, in a free flowing manner.
Design is evocative of the world of nature - leaves, flowers, landscape formations, sea urchins, coral reefs.
Neck connected with a ring clasp, to which is attached two lace leaves, each on a long stem.

Construction of the Necklace
The outline of the design was drawn onto washaway fabric then secured tightly into an embroidery hoop. The shapes and patterns of the design, drawn onto paper, were then copied directly and patterns sewn with free machine embroidery. Once the stitching was complete it was pinned out onto a sheet of polystyrene and rinsed under warm water until all the washaway fabric was dissolved. The necklace was left pinned to the sheet of polystyrene until dry. After it was removed the fastener was attached with hand sewing.
The outline of the design was inspired from a design component, part of the Teacher Training Course completed at the EGWA.
