BOTTLE, CLEAR GLASS - SEPPELTS WINE VINEGAR
c. 1900A clear glass shaped bottle with a handle on the neck that has been threaded and decorations moulded on.
The base is a circle that forms a cylinder body. The shoulder is a smooth curve that attaches to a cylinder neck with a squashed base. The opening has a finish that would allow a lid to be attached.
Images of grapes have been moulded on the bottle just underneath the neck. Three rows of text are moulded underneath.
On either side of the bottle are two raises that act as decoration and a place for a hand to grip.
The Seppelts name on the bottle is the name of the owner of the brand, Joseph Ernest Seppelt. A Prussian merchant who moved to Australia to start farming and selling tobacco.
He bought a large lot of land off a farmer in the Barossa Valley and named it Seppeltsfield.
Once he found that the land he bought was not suitable for growing tobacco but it was for wheat their fortunes improved. The high price of wheat came due to the population growth of the goldrushes of the time.
Not long after he started planting grape vines on the land and began constructing a winery.
Joeseph passed away before the completion of the winery. The company came under the control of his children and family until 1985 when it became controlled by corporate interests.
In the present day Seppeltsfield wine is produced today and exported globally.
