2004 Athens Olympic Games flag

Overview

A 2004 Athens Olympic Games flag displayed in a brown wooden frame with a black background. The flag bears the blue and white emblem of the Athens Olympics above the five-ring Olympic emblem. Surrounding the emblems are 23 original signatures of the Australian players involved in the gold medal game against Cuba. On the lower edge of the frame is a rectangular, gold-coloured metal plaque bearing the name of the recipient of the flag and the dedication.

The flag is accompanied by a separately framed written explanation of the flag's provenance and the names of the Australian 2004 Olympic Baseball Team.

Historical information

On the flag the 2004 Athens Olympic Games emblem depicts a wreath made from an olive tree branch, or kotinos. The emblem is a reference to the ancient Olympic Games, where the kotinos was the official award of Olympic champions. In addition, the olive was the sacred tree of Athens.

The flag recognises Australia's achievement in baseball at the 2004 Olympics. Twenty-three players involved in the gold medal game have signed the flag with their names and playing top numbers.

The flag was framed and presented to Don Knapp in 2007 by the Australian Baseball Federation in appreciation of his dedicated service.
