Overview

Image: Watercolour painting of four large Eucalyptus trees and one blackened tree in foreground. Other bushes and trees in middle distance, partly obscuring a large area of water. The background is made up of green and blue hills beyond the water.

Signature: Signed 'Leach Barker' on the lower left side.

Frame: Textured gilt moulding with blue/grey in recesses. Beige mounting card with feature strip patterned in silver, copper and dark green. Fine black lines either side of feature strip.

Reverse: Stickers on backing board read: 1) Art Heritage Framing. 2) Notice of acid-free mounting board. 3) 30 x 23-1/4, 2040, on back in pencil.

Historical information

Leach Barker (1897-1967) son of painter, John Barker. Leach Barker was born in England in 1897. He served in New Guinea in World War II, but when he was invalided on a war pension he took up painting watercolours seriously. He was a member of the Perth Society of Artists and taught in Albany. Barker died in 1967. His work is represented in the Art Gallery of Western Australia and regional galleries.

Leach Barker was a Western Australian artist whose works were donated to the City of Subiaco, via the Library, by WA Art collector and patron of the arts Claude Hotchin.
