Notes from interpretation panel
'This standard tool rack and tools issues by the education department were used at Perth Modern School from the 1930s until the late 1970s.
Four students worked with the tools from this rack - two complete sets were provided on each side.
Mr Arthur Mawby, who was a teacher of woodwork, metalwork and technical drawing at the school from 1961 to 1981, saw the number of manual arts teachers in the state rise from about forty at the commencement of his career, to over five hundred on his retirement. In the early twentieth century, the manual arts were known as ' hobby classes' and manual arts teacher were officially independent of the rest of the school.'
