WWII era set of miniature charity medallions
c. 1940An unusual selection of WWII era miniature charity medallions or badges mounted onto a large safety pin for wearing.
The owner was obviously active in the various home front charities supporting the service men and women in Western Australia.
From left to right, they are Australian Red Cross Society, WA Division badge on a red ribbon, Australian Comforts Fund, WA Division 1940 badge on a white ribbon, and YMCA badge on a blue ribbon.
All three medallions/badges were made by Sheridan in Perth.
People on the home front during wartime also wanted to do their bit. Charities such as the Red Cross, various Comforts funds and other societies and associations raised money to send gift parcels to those serving away from home. These included practical items such as knitted socks, mittens and balaclavas, talcum powder, writing materials and pencils, sewing kits, maps, diaries and wallets, as well as treats such as chocolate, fruit cake and tobacco. These parcels were highly anticipated by the service men and women and greatly appreciated.
