Historical information

In the early 1900s the popularity of the new motor vehicles started to grow in Western Australia and motor garages began to appear in the district. One of the early garages in Kelmscott was 'Frogmore', started in c1915 by James H.C. Bamlett, a poultry farmer who had moved to Kelmscott in c1899. James had emigrated to Western Australia from Yorkshire in the United Kingdom in the 1890s.
The garage started off selling petrol but quickly moved to hiring out motor vehicles to locals and tourists, who arrived in Kelmscott via the nearby railway line, to go for touring drive through the local hills, exploring the bush, looking at wildflowers and purchasing local produce.
James Bamlett died at the Kelmscott family home in1947, aged 83.
