Historical information

This book by Mary E. Shipley was presented to Linda Batt in 1908 for her achievements at the Bedfordale Sunday School. Linda Batt was born in 1894 in the local area to David and Mary Ellen Batt.
Joseph and Ruth Batt arrived in Western Australia in 1838. In 1849 Joseph was given the tender to manage the lead and copper shaft mine in the hills above what was to become Armadale. The mine, owned by the Western Australian Mining Company, was started in 1846 and was the Swan Colonies first commercial mine.
Joseph only worked on the mine for a year before requesting to be released from his contract. Joseph though had discovered other opportunities in the district and in 1850 purchased a 10-acre block next to the mine which he named 'Paradise Farm'. That year Linda's father David was born. Joseph quickly established the family farm as well as a water powered, on the Nerrigen Brook', mill which was available to local farmers to use to grind their wheat crops. In 1853 Joseph soled the farm to his son-in law Joseph Boult and moved the family to nearby Serpentine.
David when an adult and married returned to the Armadale/Bedfordale area to work and raise his family. The family were members of the Congregational Church which ran the Bedfordale Sunday School.
Linda would go on to marry Cecil Worsley in 1919 and move to Katanning.
