Overview

Tan stained wooden frame with oval design carved on front. Inside paper roll of honour. On sides are Roman columns that form a victory arch. Across the top of the arch is the Union Jack and the Australian Flag. Between the flags is the Australian Infantry Forces Rising Star and text [ROLL OF HONOR]. Text at top of each column, on four banners wrapped around the column and on base of column. Left column top [GALLIPOLI] on banners [POZIERES / YPRES / SOMME / MESSINES] on base [VICTORY / 1914]. Right column top [PALESTINE] , on banners [ARMIENTERES / BULLECOURT / PASCHENDALE / VILLERS BRETTONEUX], on base [FREEDOM / 1919] Kneeling on top of column bases are two women each holding a laurel wreath inwards. At the bottom in the middle is the Australian Coat of Arms.
In the middle in red are the names of the men and women who served in World War One under the title [ARMADALE / AND DISTRICTS]. Those who were killed in action have an asterisk next to their name. Names divided up into the area they came from. Left column of names from Armadale, 2nd row on names include those from Beenup. 3rd row includes names from Bedfordale, 4th row from West Armadale and 5th row includes women who served as nurses.

Historical information

Roll of Honour issued to the local community, listing the names of the men from the localities of Armadale, West Armadale, Beenup (Byford) and Bedfordale who had enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force and had served overseas during World War One. The roll though is not an accurate or complete list of the local men who enlisted from the local area, nor does it include the women who enlisted and served as nurses.

This object is part of collection with good provenance and interpretive potential that tells the story of the City of Armadale's connection to armed conflicts around the world from the late 1800s to today. The collection explores the experiences of people associated with the City of Armadale who went to war, their experiences when they returned as well as how these conflicts impacted the community who stayed behind.
