Historical information

Samuel and Sarah Salter arrived in Western Australia aboard the Diadem in 1842, settling near north of Bunbury. In the 1850s the family moved to Perth and in the early 1870s their son Samuel Salter Junior moved to Kelsmcott. Their daughter Hannah had also married Thomas Buckingham in 1871 in Kelmscott.
In 1875 Samuel married Ellen Buckingham, the sister of Thomas Buckingham. In 1878 Ellen unexpectedly died leaving behind Samuel and their baby daughter. Nine years later Samuel married Ellen Best and they soon moved to a home on River Road in Kelmscott where they planted a vineyard, started making wine and established a saw mill. The home was called 'Sunnyside' and housed members of the Salter family until 1963 when the property was sold.
This paining is of the Salter family River Road home, painted by Perth artist Frank Leonard Walters in 1926. Frank was a member of the Western Australian Society of Arts and regularly exhibited in their shows. In 1922 he exhibited a trio of paintings titled 'In the Hills' described as 'being full of charm of the open air.' (The Daily News 19 Dec 1922 p5). In 1927 he submitting 'several interesting landscapes' at one of their shows (The Daily News 14 January 1927 p7).
