Large Copper Nail

Subcollections
Overview

A large copper nail (spivet) that has been driven through a small fragment of weathered timber. This was found under the Busselton Jetty in the 1980s so is assumed that it may have been part of the jetty that was destroyed by cyclone Alby in 1978.

Historical information

Severe Tropical Cyclone Alby was regarded as the most devastating tropical cyclone to impact southwestern Western Australia on record. The combination of Alby's fast movement and hurricane-force winds caused widespread damage. Along the coast, large swells flooded low-lying areas and the Busselton Jetty was severely damaged. Further inland, bushfires were worsened by the storm as it brought little rain, generally less than 20 mm along the coast and these fires burned roughly 114,000 hectares and destroyed two towns. Five fatalities are attributed to Alby.
