Contextual Information

Lewis Clarkson Durlacher was the son of Toodyay Resident Magistrate Alfred Durlacher. Durlacher was stationed at Toodyay (Newcastle) between 1861-1865. Lewis was born in 1861 before his father was appointed Resident Magistrate at Champion Bay (Geraldton) and moved his family out of the Toodyay district.
In 1865 Alfred Durlacher was accused of misappropriating funds and committed suicide. His son, Lewis, went on to accidentally fatally shoot himself, aged 23, at Shark Bay. Lewis' headstone is the last one remaining in what was called the Freshwater Camp Cemetery, now re-named the Pioneer Park at Denham.
