BEJOORDING SCHOOL

c. 1875 - 1900
Overview

A black and white slightly blurred photo of Bejoording school.
The main part of the building is probably of rendered brick, pale upper with darker base.
To the left side is a small area that has corrugated walls and roof as does the main building and verandah wall.
A metal tank is under the verandah roof and a brick chimney protrudes through the roof.
There is a glazed paned window in the front left wall of the building. Gum trees are to the left beyond the building. Cleared foreground.

Historical information

A school was established at the Bejoording homestead (now known as Syred's Cottage) complex in the 1860's and the Syred family employed ticket of leave men as teachers and farm labourers.

By 1869 there were twenty children of school age at Bejoording… William Syred then had a mud-bat building constructed for use as a classroom, which was put at the disposal of the Toodyay Board of Education, but the Board were not interested in managing a school at Bejoording. The Syreds engaged a teacher themselves and the Bejoording school opened in 1869 as a private school with around twenty children… When Seven Springs [school] closed in 1872, the Bejoording school was transferred from private to public school status. It had an enrolment of twenty-one. The school closed in the latter half of 1875. No reason for the closure has been found, but generally, schools closed when the enrolment fell below eight with no prospect of increasing.
