From humble beginnings at Prinsep Reserve in 1934, the Palmyra Rugby club now presents as a prime member in the Tompkins Park Sporting Complex. From under 6’s through to premier grade, the club now has 24 teams, including a women’s team, with representation in the National Women’s squad. From its origins in a tin shed at Prinsep Reserve in 1924, the need for better accommodation was paramount. The club allied with the local Australian Rules Football Club and with support from Melville Council erected new joint clubrooms with a moveable partition down the centre. Melville Council made a $50,000 grant; the clubs added $10,000 each, and another $23,500 was raised from gold, silver and bronze brick donations. The bricks were panelled with plaques showing the names of the monetary donors. A further loan from the Council ensured the success of the venture, with the loan being repaid in full over subsequent years. The combined facility to accommodate the Palmyra Rugby Union and the Melville Football Club was officially opened on the corner of Stock Road and canning Highway in 1980, and the clubs continued to enjoy facilities until a move in 1997 to Tompkins Park in Alfred Cove. The transition has been successful with the acquisition of an additional playing field, as the club continued to expand. The 2017 year had brought unparalleled success over all grades with six premierships, first grade minor premiers, and the club being awarded Champion Club by the West Australian Rugby Union. The longevity and success of the rugby club has also been rewarded with 3 times Reserves champion premierships for the years 2015, 16 and 17.
