Overview

Program of the 1959 Australian Baseball Championship Series held in Melbourne, Victoria. A5-size 28-page booklet with covers on gloss paper. Front cover is highlighted in orange and green and depicts a hand-drawn image of a baseball player swinging his bat. The back cover is black and white with an advertisement for Heinz condensed soups, depicting a cartoon image of a baseball batter swinging at a ball with the No. 57 on it. Internal pages are black and white on plain paper. They include an itinerary for matches and entertainment, score sheets, official teams, player profiles, and rules of the game. The signature of the owner of the program is written in blue ink in the top right-hand corner of the front page.

Historical information

The 1959 Claxton Shield was the 20th annual Australian Baseball Championship Series and was held in Melbourne, Victoria from July 25 to August 2. It was originally scheduled for Perth, Western Australia, but when teams hinted at pulling out of the Shield that year due to travel costs, the venue was moved. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The series was won by South Australia, claiming their fifth Shield title.

Contextual Information

This program was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by 1959 team member Kaye Greenham, pitcher in the Western Australian team. Greenham was an outstanding baseball player and represented Western Australia in 11 Claxton Shield Series (1957, 1959-1962, 1967, 1970-1974). He was inducted into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2021.
