Bottom right corner displaying the movies covers for the Wizard of Oz, Moulin Rouge and Harry Potter. The sign display music notes on the background with brown beige colouring at the top of the sign, the middle section displaying a piano, gutar and violin with a purple tone, the bottom middle section is white musiic sheets, the bottom section is music sheets with a purple hue.

Some damage present to face of sign, with scratching from years of use revealing yellow wood beneath the imagery, damage is most prominent in the top left and right corners, aswell as the bottom left corner.

Historical information

Classic Sounds was a music store located at 223 Railway Avenue in Kelmscott. The business was started in c1991 by Bernard School. in 2001 Morley John purchased the business and ran it until his retirement in 2023. The store not only sold musical instruments and associated equipment but also had studios for music lessons.

This add for the store was displayed at the Armadale Grand Cinema located at the Armadale Central Shoppince Centre in Armadale.

The Armadale Grand Cinema was part of a WA-owned and operated cinema chain, originally formed as a family business in 1928. The Armadale venue for Grand Cinemas was opened on the 20th of January in 2005 and was the first cinema complex in the City of Armadale. In 2022 the Grand Cinema company went into administration and was forced to close the Armadale venue after difficulties recovering after the 2019 Covid-19 pandemic. Grand Cinemas is one of Australias oldest independant film exhibitors.

Statement of significance

This item is a good example of advertising signs used for local businesses in the early 2000s.

This sign was used to advertise classic sounds which was a music shop opened by Bernard School in 1991. This business continued to be run by the John family from 2001-2023.
