FIGURINE: WEMBLEY WARE FOOTBALLER, EAST PERTH

Overview

Small, hand-painted, glazed Wembley Ware china figurine of an Australian Rules football player, holding a football and in a running position with the left foot forward. The figurine has been painted with the East Perth Football team colours, with a dark blue and black jersey and long socks. The player also has black laced football boots and black hair. The base of the ornament is green, with a tuft of grass beside the right leg of the player.

Base: White glazed clay underside with a small firing hole.

Historical information

Wembley Ware was a line of fine china produced by the Bristile company at the their factory in the Subiaco industrial area from 1946 to 1961. Its many different decorative pieces, also known as Fancy Ware or Lustre Ware were notable for their originality and their lustrous, sometimes opalescent glazes. This piece is part of a collection donated by Mr. Ossie (G O) Edwards.
