A large metal trunk with wood bracing strips on lid and sides. Wood skeleton lined with paper inside. There are 3 metal latches on the opening side of the trunk. There are 5 wood / leather bracing strips on the latched side which are all attached by a decorative metal stud.

Trunk used by the Bovell Family onboard the "West Australian" - sailed from London, and arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia on 20th October 1859

Contextual information

Irish-born Joseph Bovell (1839–1903) and his wife Elizabeth "Jane" Bovell (née Burnside, 1829–1909) arrived in Western Australia on October 20, 1859, aboard the ship "West Australian". The family, including their first child, William, and two of Joseph’s bachelor brothers sailed to start a new life in Australia.

The couple had six more children after arriving in the Swan River Colony. Joseph was employed in the Police Force for approximately 17 years before settling in Busselton and becoming the proprietor of the Ship Hotel in the 1870s.
