Ships Locker
Locker salvaged from the Captains Cabin of S.S. Georgette which was wrecked on 1st December 1876 at Calgardup Bay (Redgate). The locker is made of wood and has a cupboard at the bottom that has a knob and keyhole. Above this is a drawer with a keyhole. On the top of the locker there is 10cm high wooden balustrade on 2 side that would have allowed items to be stowed here. The tattered remains of travel sticker on the door shows that the locker was used after its salvage from the wreck.
The Georgette was built in 1872 at Dumbarton. She was a 337 ton iron screw-steamer, 46.2 metres long, 6.9 metres wide, 3.4 metres deep, carried two masts with a schooner rig, a capacity of 460 tons deadweight, and her two engines produced 48 horsepower. The Georgette was sold in England to Western Australian buyers for £14,000. She arrived at Fremantle, Western Australia in September 1873 and was put to work as a coastal trading and passenger service between Fremantle, Albany and Champion Bay.
The steamer "Georgette" was en route to Adelaide with a cargo of Jarrah and 50 passengers, when on 1st December 1876 she was driven ashore and wrecked at Calgardup, near Margaret River. A lifeboat was launched and six lives were lost when it was smashed against the sides of the "Georgette" and then a 16 year old Grace Bussell and Sam Isaacs rode their horses into the surf to rescue the helpless men, women and children.
