W. D. & H. O. Wills Lace Flag Cigarette Cards

c. 1916
Overview

Three 50x70 mm lace cigarette cards with cross-flags of silk stitching. The three cards are part of a set of 13 produced by Wills in 1915-1917 and include (a) Australian , (b) Japanese, and (c) white ensign flags.

Historical information

Cigarette cards were added as ‘stiffeners’ to flimsy cigarette packs in the 1880s. These provided a base to add advertising (the brand name) and, eventually, art to enhance the ‘collectibility’ of such items. The lace cards are unusual as they are not stiff and they are relatively uncommon.
