W. D. & H. O. Wills Lace Flag Cigarette Cards - Complete Set of 13

c. 1916
Overview

Rectangular white lace with coloured stitched cross-flags in silk depicting allied countries.

Historical information

Cigarette cards were added as ‘stiffeners’ to flimsy cigarette packs in the 1880s. These provided a base to add advertising (the brand name) and, eventually, art to enhance the ‘collectability’ of such items. The lace cards are unusual as they are not stiff and they are relatively uncommon. These lace cigarette cards are a complete set of 13 that include (a) Australian (b) Belgium (c) Blue Ensign (d) France (e) Ireland (f) Italy (g) Japanese (h) Red Ensign (i) Russian (j) Scotland (k) Union Jack (m) Servia White Ensign flags.
