FOUNDERS 1969

On the opening day of golf at MGGC on 3rd May 1969 black and white photographs were taken of the club's founders. These are believed to have been donated by club member Elsie Maurice but it is not known if she was also the photographer.

On the day, one of the eight founders, John Cusack, was absent.

Tony Kelly identified the founders in this photograph (left to right) as:

Jack Bennett, Harold Ingram, Ted Grigg, John Cusack, Hugh Hancock, Tony Kelly, Bruce Harvey (front), and Murray Day. For reference a further image ''Founders 1969 with name tags'' has been attached.

After this occasion two attempts were made to complete the complement of founders in the photograph by 'cut and pasting' images of John Cusack into the better of the photographs numbered 1 above. The source images (hardcopy or digital) are not available. The only known copies are framed and hanging on the clubhouse walls:

The first attempt appears in Item 2023.194. This copy of the image was either scanned or photographed from the collage. It is attached to this item as 'Founders 1969 with Cusack'. It is obvious that the person behind the Melville Glades sign at the rear has been 'added' into the picture. This person was identified by Tony Kelly (the only surviving founder at the time) as John Cusack. That image of him in the same clothing has almost certainly been taken from a 'working bee' photograph - Item 2021.70. A second, high-definition version of this image is attached.

The second attempt was published in the Silver Anniversary Booklet (Item 2020.13.1) with the eight founders named. This is considered the official photograph of the founders. John Cusack is kneeling and formally dressed in this version of the photograph which is framed in 2023.193 Founders of MGGC Honour Board. This photograph has also used the image Founders 1969 1 above as a base with the image of John Cusack being 'added'. An original of this added image of John Cusack formally dressed cannot be located.
