Koeppe's Shop On The Perth-Fremantle Road

c. 1893
Overview

The Koeppe's Shop on the Perth-Fremantle Road. Small, gabled, weatherboard building on stumps. Doorway from the iron roofed verandah is flanked by six-paned windows displaying goods and posters. There is a cane chair on the right hand end of the verandah and standing on the ground in front of it are Dora Kitchen in dark clothing and white apron and a young child wearing a light pinafore and bonnet. On the far right is a post and rail fence. The left hand end of the verandah is partly obscured by two jarrah trees. Against the furthest tree is propped a noticeboard with handwritten advertising of assorted provisions at town prices.

Dora Kitchen, the older girl, is looking after a young child who is thought to be a member of Koeppe family. Claremont Avenue was the section of the Perth-Fremantle Road that passed through Claremont. The Perth-Fremantle Road was renamed Stirling Highway in 1932 after the first Governor of Western Australia, Admiral Sir James Stirling
