Historical information

Samuel & Eliza Efford (married Kent, UK 1844) arrived Fremantle 1863 with 4 children (William, Ann, Margaret, Samuel), in the "Lord Dalhousie". A fifth child, named Charles John was born in 1864. Samuel was a Pensioner Guard in WA, having been a private in the Royal Artillery. Their son, also Samuel, married Eliza Jane Cunden (lived Chester Road, Claremont). Their children were Gladys and Samuel. Gladys married Gordon Bull 1928. Samuel III married Connie Fisher.

Written on back in ink is the following information: Granny Efford of Shenton Road Claremont (known as Butler's Swamp in the early days). Eliza Efford, wife of the late Samuel Efford Snr of Fremantle (chemist, medicine maker and dispenser at Fremantle gaol and also to the British Army). To the left of her, her eldest son William, next Samuel, then Charles: to the right, her eldest daughter Lizzie, then Maggie. (Both Thompsons - Lizzie married the father, Maggie married his son.) Their respective wives and husbands are directly behind them. The older members of their families are in the back row with wives and husbands, cousins, brothers and sisters. The children in the front row are, from the left: Paul Thompson, Sam Efford, Sam Efford (Ted), Gladys Efford, Ivy Efford. Sitting on the two aunts' knees are Veronica Thompson on Lizzie Thompson's knee and Beth Moore on Maggie Thompson's knee. The babies in the row behind Granny Efford are Evelyn Thompson in her father's arms and Mabel Efford on her mother Ruth's knee. The print was donated to the Claremont Museum by Mrs Edith Hjill of 9 Shenton Road Claremont (third generation 'down the line' from Aunt Lizzie Thompson.
