Overview

The Schruth family on the lawn in front of large stone house with bay windows. It is surrounded by a verandah with balustrading, turned posts, decorative brackets and valance and a striped bull nosed iron roof. Above this, corbels support the iron roof and there is a large central chimney. The family and an American nursemaid are informally grouped on the lawn with two dogs and four flamingo-like garden ornaments. (L-R) Elizabeth, Wilhelm, Amanda (seated on grass), Friederich, Lillian, Maud (or maid), Heinrich, Anna and Frieda.

Historical information

Frederich Ludwig was married to Anna Sophia Frederich Dorothea. The family came to Australia in early 1890s. Lived in Adelaide. Came to WA in goldrush years. Lived in Albany and then Perth. Owned houses in Vincent Street and hotels in Perth, including the Royal Hotel, and the building between Hay and Murray Streets that was demolished to allow City Arcade to be developed. Formal rooms in their home in Bishop Road (donor of 05.168 says 'Pensioner Row') had all gold furniture and many ornaments.
