On the cover there is an outline of a black rectangle split into three sections; in the top section in two lines of black italic letter is "Great Southern Railway.", "(WESTERN AUSTRALIA)"; in the second section in three lines of black lettering is "GOODS CLASSIFICATION", "AND", "SCHEDULE OF RATES"; in the bottom section in seven lines of black lettering is "APPROVED BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR", "IN EXECUTIVE COUNCIL., THE TWENTY FIFTH", "DAY OF APRIL 1889","J. ARTHUR WRIGHT,", "Commissioner of Railways,", "LONDON", "PRINTED BY McCORQUODALE & CO. LIMITED, 'THE ARMOURY' SOUTHWARK."
The book was printed before Albany Station, the Great Southern Railway was opened in 1889, this would have been the first information that was provided to employees.
