Contextual Information

The Santa Maria Catholic Church, commonly known as the "Old Catholic Chapel", was once in the "Old" township of Toodyay (present day West Toodyay).
This building was erected between 1856 & 1859, when it was consecrated and opened by Bishop Serra.
It was then used as church & school. The first Priest was Canon Raffaele Martelli.
By 1910 this chapel was in bad repair.
For reference see pages 133-6, 326, 356, of Old Toodyay & Newcastle by Rica Ericson.
