Overview

Watercolour inks and gouache of the U.S Great White fleet at anchor in King George Sound, during its visit to Albany in September 1908.

It is a dark black background, superimposed with light to dark grey searchlight beams. In the bottom third of the picture, the lowest beams are broken with the silhouettes of the warships. The hulls of the two closest ships are visible, together with the funnels and masts of at least 3 other ships.

Inscriptions and markings

In the top RH border are pencilled the names 'VERMONT' & 'VIRGINIA', presumably identifying the two closest ships. Also 'OHIO' & ILL?, identifying 'OHIO' & 'ILLINOIS'. In the bottom border is pencilled 'WISCONSIN'. In the RH border, the continuation of three searchlight beams occurring in the picture, are pencilled in. Close to the upper beam is pencilled, Kansas; in the centre beam, Huze; and below the centre beam, two words, which could be Maine and Hugo.
