Patriotic Carnival celluloid fundraising pin - ship
c. 1943World War Two era Patriotic Carnival celluloid fundraising pin. The outer perimeter of the pin is die-cut to trace the outline of a naval vessel, featuring a flat hull at the water line, a raised central superstructure, funnels, a mast, and an elongated bow and stern
It features a monochrome, blue-toned photographic depiction of a battlecruiser complete with a tall observation mast, ventilation funnels, and armoured gun turrets.
The words 'PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL' are printed across the lower hull of the ship.
It has a metal pin threaded through a small hole for attachment. The reverse of the pin is plain, with no maker's marks.
This particular pin is believed to be part of a series sold in South Australia around 1943. This example featured a naval theme, while the others represented the Air Force (a blue spitfire plane graphic) and the Army (a blue tank graphic).
A similar series commemorating ANZAC Day in 1943 featured an identical plane graphic, a red version of the tank graphic, and a blue and white British Sailor's cap representing the Navy.
Items like this were traditionally produced as fundraising novelties, souvenir tokens, or celebratory badges during community events, home-front war efforts, or military carnivals.
