Patriotic Carnival celluloid fundraising pin - plane
c. 1943World War Two era Patriotic Carnival celluloid fundraising pin. The outer perimeter of the pin is die-cut to trace the outline of a Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane
It features a monochrome, blue-toned photographic depiction of the plane on a cream background.
It has a top-down, slightly angled silhouette of the aircraft fuselage, cockpit and tail assembly, showing the iconic elliptical wings and military roundels.
The words 'PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL' are printed across the side of the fuselage.
It has a metal pin threaded through a small hole for attachment. The reverse of the pin is plain, with no maker's marks.
This particular pin is believed to be part of a series sold in South Australia around 1943. This example represented the Air Force, while the others featured the Navy (a blue ship graphic) and the Army (a blue tank graphic).
A similar series commemorating ANZAC Day in 1943 featured an identical plane graphic, a red version of the tank graphic, and a blue and white British Sailor's cap representing the Navy.
Items like this were traditionally produced as fundraising novelties, souvenir tokens, or celebratory badges during community events, home-front war efforts, or military carnivals.
