Souvenir button welcoming 'The Digger Prince' to Australia
1920Circular souvenir badge or button featuring a central greyscale image of Prince Edward wearing his naval uniform and cap in front of the flags of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) and Australia (Red Ensign) on a cream background.
It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
The words 'The Digger Prince' are written in dark grey upper case lettering around the top of the badge, while the words 'Welcome to Australia' are written in cream around the bottom. The border and rim of the badge are steel grey in colour. There is no maker's mark.
The reverse of the badge has a broad grey metal border within which is a shiny silver coating, some of which has been worn off over time.
There is a metal pin which encircles the edge of the badge before ending in a point which can be pushed through clothing for attachment.
His Royal Highness Prince Edward arrived in Australia aboard HMS Renown to great fanfare in May 1920. Over the following three months, he and his entourage visited over 100 regional and urban destinations on a 14,000-kilometre round trip.
Many souvenirs including this souvenir button were produced to celebrate the royal visit.
