Allbrite nickel silver spoon stamped with 'Munitions'
c. 1940NIckel silver dessert spoon made by the Allbrite company with the word 'Munitions' stamped onto the handle. It has been well used and much of the silver colour has aged to grey brown.
On the reverse, the number '7' is stamped crossways while the maker's name is stamped along the length of the handle.
This nickel silver spoon was likely to have been used in the canteen or dining hall of a munitions factory during World War Two.
Nickel silver is a copper, nickel, and zinc alloy developed in Europe after the Chinese alloy "paktong" was imported in the 17th century. It became popular for silver-plated cutlery (called E.P.N.S. - electroplated nickel silver) in the 19th century because it was a durable, inexpensive alternative to sterling silver.
