'Wounded smoking cigarette' by Florence White 1918
1918Framed pastel drawing entitled 'Wounded smoking cigarette' by World War One U.S. Army nurse, Florence White.
The portrait is drawn onto taupe coloured paper and features a seated American soldier in uniform and tin hat, smoking a cigarette. His arm is in a white sling.
The portrait has a limited colour palette of mostly brown, khaki, grey and black with a few white highlights.
The frame is modern and made from metal held together by screws. A white cord is attached to the back edge of the frame on both sides by triangular metal fasteners.
The title and maker of the work are typed on a white sticker on the reverse, along with the exhibition number '069' from when it was displayed. A number is written in pencil in the lower left corner.
This is one of three pastel portraits of military patients held in the collection which were done by U.S. nurse, Florence White in 1918. They were exhibited a century later in an exhibition in the United States. The catalogue numbers, 68-70, and titles of the artworks are printed on the backs of the framed pieces.
