'Wounded eating on bed' by Florence White 1918
1918Framed pastel drawing entitled 'Wounded eating on bed' by World War One U.S. Army nurse, Florence White.
The portrait is drawn onto grey coloured paper and features an American soldier with dark brown hair sitting on the edge of a hospital bed eating from a plate on a tray. He appears to be wearing pyjamas or hospital attire and has either a jacket or blanket draped over his shoulders for warmth.
The portrait has a limited colour palette of mostly grey and black with a few white highlights. While the soldier is the focal point of the artwork, there are a few faint lines defining the hospital room.
The frame is modern and made from metal held together by screws. A white cord is attached to the back edge of the frame on both sides by triangular metal fasteners.
The title and maker of the work are typed on a white sticker on the reverse, along with the exhibition number '070' from when it was displayed.
This is one of three pastel portraits of military patients held in the collection which were done by U.S. nurse, Florence White in 1918. They were exhibited a century later in an exhibition in the United States. The catalogue numbers, 68-70, and titles of the artworks are printed on the backs of the framed pieces.
