Historical information

Studied at Guildford Grammar School. Completed his Tertiary Studies at Melbourne University. Served as a gunner in 103 Howitzer Infantry in the Great War, and was wounded at The Somme. On the outbreak of World War II he joined the Army Medical Corps and served in the Middle East and Mediterranean and when war was over, returned to Perth to practise. Maternal grandparents lived at 46 Victoria Ave. Dr Johnston moved from Colin Street to Victoria Avenue.

The family kept ponies at 34 and 46 (maternal grandparents) Victoria Avenue. The Black Shetland (middle) called "Charming" (a mare) often escaped to Riley Road or Butler's Swamp to a skewbald stallion named "Robin Hood". See WA Newspapers Monday June 26, 1961, Thursday October 27, 1960.
