Overview

Laundry Mangle – hand powered. William Sandover & Co
Overview: A floor standing laundry mangle whose primary purpose was to press household linen and clothing smooth. It has two wooden rollers which are rotated via a geared crank handle. The top roller exerts pressure via two spring-loaded adjustable turn screws at either end of the roller.
The mangle is fixed to a cast iron frame sitting on four non-swivelling 90mm metal wheels. A connecting flat wooden board runs between the top roller adjustable turn screws.

From the late 1800s department stores did not manufacture all that they sold. This William Sandover & Co branded mangle would have been manufactured by others and sold using a strategy of ‘own label’ marketing.
