Historical information

The Rotary Club of Kelmscott was founded in 1976 and operated through to 202? when it closed due to a lack of active members. Many of the members joined the neighbouring Rotary Club of Armadale.

The Rotary Club of Chicago's wagon wheel emblem influenced the development of the modern day wheel. After approval for clubs to design their own emblem, many variations of the wheel were evident. They all had to follow the rule that the original wheel must continue as the basic part of the emblem. During the 1912 convention in Duluth, Minnesota, more standards for designs was announced "The emblem consists of the basic principle of a wheel with gears cut on the outer edge. ... The spokes are to be so designed as to indicate strength; the object of the gears, or cogs, being two-fold: First to relieve the plainness of the design, and Second, to symbolize power". The word rotary was a must in each clubs design. Many variations were created, but all obeying the Duluth convention standards. 1921 the current rotary international sign was approved. An update to include a keyhole was approved in 1929, finalising the international emblem.

Rotary International was formed on February 23 1905 by Paul Harris. Rotary International aim at providing aid and action to improve the health and livelihood of people and their communities, at local, national and international levels.
