LICENCE: BICYCLE LICENCE PLATE, WITH FIXINGS

Overview

Small metal bicycle licence plate. Object is significantly rusted and shows signs of wear and tear. No sign of original colour or condition. Both sides have the same raised licence number '34085' in the centre of the object. On one side, the 'face side' there is a small raised edge around the object. Fixed to the object are two dark grey/ black fastening strips of metal on the top left and right sides. At one time the strips could be removed or adjusted, however the bolts fixing the metal have rusted together. On the face side of the plate the nut's face can be seen which has a single lined indentation for a screwdriver. On the reverse side is the bolt head.

Historical information

The items was donated to the Claremont Museum by Gil McCallum, the son of Bert McCallum. According to Gil all bike owners were issued license plates before 1940 at an annual rate of 1 shilling, until licencing of bikes was abolished in the 1960s. Bert rode his bike to work at Metter until his retirement at 74. When Bert removed his plates he kept them in his toolbox until his death, where his son subsequently kept the plates in his toolbox
