The Toodyay Society held its first Newcastle Ball in the Toodyay Memorial Hall. The Toodyay Shire Council entertained Sir Ernest H. Lee Steere (Toodyay Society inaugural Patron) and Lady (Jessica) Lee Steere and Society President Robert (Bob) Mattin and his wife Lyn, and other special guests, at a reception in the Toodyay Shire Council Chambers prior to the Ball, which had a colonial theme. The Society held the Newcastle Ball annually in the years 1981-1986, and 1988.
