Historical information

These stables replaced earlier wooden stables that were burnt in 1890. They seemed to have remained in use by the Newcastle (later re-named Toodyay) Police until around the mid-1950s. As motor vehicles took of the role of the horse it is likely the stables became more of a storage facility.
Around 1956, after a severe storm, the roof of the stables was removed as it was declared unsafe. Over the next two decades, the walls further deteriorated with storm damage and also as a result of the 1968 Meckering earthquake.
In 1974 it was resolved to use a portion of a recently allocated National Estate grand on several projects including the repair of the stables, which by this time was in poor condition.
The restoration of the stables was completed in 1977.
