PHOTOGRAPH: 'UGLY MEN'S FLOAT' - SUBIACO FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL

Overview

The original sepia photograph postcard shows a group on a horse drawn float. Hand written on the image: 'Subiaco Fancy Dress Carnival, 26.10.14'. The cart is pulled by two horses, festooned with French and British flags and wearing an elaborate harness. The float is driven by a man wearing a hat, a suit with a waistcoat and a bow tie. Another man wearing a white suit and hat is standing beside the cart with his hand resting on the float. On the float: Two boys dressed as soldiers, one holding a flag. A girl dressed as Britannia with helmet, tripod and shield. Younger boys dressed as sailors, some carrying rifles or pointing them to the camera. A banner decorated with flags, declaring 'Britons Never Shall be Slaves'. A man in a sailor's uniform is standing next to the float. He has a model of a ship saying 'Advance Australia Fair' on his head. The float is decorated with crepe paper and flags. Handwritten on the back of the original photograph: 'To Frank and his brother From Miss Toll Best Wishes 1914'.
