'Night Baseball News' Vol. 1 No. 1 dated November 10, 1954. A 16-page A5-size booklet printed on light tan-coloured paper. Inner and outer covers contain advertisements. The inner pages list the teams competing in the 1954/55 series, the trophies and awards to be won, names of committee members, the season's fixtures, and the program and players competing on the opening night.

Historical information

This is the first issue of the 'Night Baseball News' and heralded the debut of the Night Baseball League in Perth, Western Australia in 1954. It was the official publication of the West Australian Baseball League (Inc.) and was published to coincide with games played at the WACA Ground in Perth throughout the Night Baseball Series.

Contextual Information

This is the official program and fixtures of the first game to be played in the inaugural Night Baseball League competition. The Governor of Western Australia, Sir Charles Gairdner, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., C.B., C.B.E., pitched the first ball in the match titled "The Battle of the Cities" between the Perth "Tigers" and the Fremantle "Braves".

The program was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Ernie Mews who, in 1954/55 at age 15, was a State League Colts grade player for Perth Baseball Club. Ernie went on to represent Western Australia in State baseball teams as both a player and coach in the 1960s.

Statement of significance

This rare 1954 programme, of excellent provenance, is of historical significance as a record of the inaugural night baseball competition in Western Australia. It is Volume 1, No. 1 of the 'night baseball NEWS' programme, which was the official publication of the West Australian Baseball League. The programme was published fortnightly before each night baseball competition. Its pages list players and teams of the day and, along with the sponsors' advertisements, is a source of information for researchers of baseball and Perth society in 1954. It is in good condition and complete.
