First World War Black and White Photograph of an Explosion in Water

1916 - 1918
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing a large explosion that has taken place in a water mass. The image shows a tall plume rising from the water against the sky. The water appears to be a wadi or river. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition, although the image does show many marks when enlarged. There is a small number 1 written on the reverse top corner.

Historical information

It cannot be confirmed where this image was taken but during their campaign in Egypt the 10th Light Horse and one squadron of the 9th Light Horse were given orders to destroy the cisterns in Wadi Mukhsheib and the pools at Khabrit–el–Habbal. In the words of Trooper Robert GRIBBLE 1581 of the 10th Light Horse Regiment in a letter to his mother published in the Albany Advertiser on 28 August 1916; “After we finished sapping they put three charges into the pool. They filled three kerosene tins full of gelignite and it was a beautiful sight when it went off. It shot the water about 50 yards in the air, and there were cameras all round the pool. I got a chance to get a couple of snaps and will send you two or three. When we finished our work we started for home. It was about 12 o'clock noon then and we arrived home at our old camp about 5.30 p.m.”
