ELECTRIC IRON
c. 1925This iron was acquired by Mr Frank Cull in his electrical repairs business in Rokeby Road during the 1930's. It is a small iron, and was probably used for ironing gathers at cuffs, waistline, shoulder etc. The shape is that of an elongated triangle, curving in at the peak. The black bakelite handle is attached to iron on a D-shaped metal frame held to iron by 2 large knobs. On rear upper surface of iron are 3 x 15mm prongs which could accommodate either of 2 types of plug, thus making the iron adaptable to 2 different voltages. However, it was considered a very dangerous iron because of the exposed prong. There is a wedge-shaped extension at back of iron, bearing a black plate inscribed 'The "Smoothwell' Iron. Premier System. Cat. No. 61. 3 lbs. 100/125. 200/250 volts. 22/11 AMPS. Serial No. D.87656. British Manufacture.' The base is smooth silver metal. There is a small red bakelite disc on metal support beside front of handle, on which thumb can rest.
