a) Collar box: cylindrical in shape, cardboard, red exterior, well fitted lid. Lid slots onto the base and has the word 'Collars' in script impressed in gold in the lid's centre, with a flourish underneath.

b) Man's shirt collar: White, stiff, buttoned. Inside back to one side is the makers mark stamped as follows...

Contextual Information

Welch, Margetson and Company, a firm of menswear manufacturers specialising in shirts, collars, silk handkerchiefs, silk neckties, scarves and braces, was established in the UK in 1832. In 1847 the first Londonderry, Northern Ireland factory was opened, followed by Carlisle Road factory, Londonderry, in 1876. A tie factory was built in Bermondsey, London in 1890, to which the production of all other company products moved in due course
Early in the 20th century an associated factory for the shirt, collar and tie trade was opened in Melbourne, Australia and registered as Welch, Margetson & Co. Pty. Ltd.
