Contextual Information

a) Allen & Ginter was a Richmond, Virginia, USA tobacco manufacturing company formed by John Allen and Lewis Ginter in 1865. Allen & Ginter created and marketed the first cigarette cards for collecting and trading in the United States.
b) W. Duke & Sons Co. of Durham, North Carolina USA. ventured into the tobacco manufacturing business in the late 1870s when cigarettes were still hand rolled. In 1885 a gamble on investing in a cigarette making machine, as a way of competing with larger tobacco companies, paid off handsomely. Within five years W. Duke & Sons had become the largest cigarette manufacturer in the nation. In 1890 W. Duke & Sons joined with four other leading cigarette companies to form the American Tobacco Co., gradually losing its separate identity.
c) Goodwin & Co, New York City USA. was initially E. Goodwin and Brother, and was founded before the American Civil War. It was known for its cigarette brands "Gypsy Queen" and "Old Judge". In 1890 the company merged with four others (including W. Duke & Sons) to form the American Tobacco Co. This was to create an American monopoly on tobacco product manufacturing and retail.
